POSITION: Sr. Operational Metrics Engineer
LOCATION: Itasca, IL
Summary
The Senior Operational Metrics Engineer is responsible for driving quality improvement and cost reduction efforts by reporting information such as network availability, MTTR, MTTC, usage, capacity, outages, and user experience. This person is also a key participant in outage analysis including root cause analysis and post mortems. This position also includes automation of data collection, processing and creation of standard reports as well as direct analysis of data for creation of one-of-a-kind reports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with all levels of management to understand business requirements for reporting of information
- Be able to manipulate data for analysis to answer key questions and to identify trends and poorly performing components of the system.
- Responsible for generation of standardized reports including checking of results, summarization of key findings and notable exceptions, and investigation of data anomalies.
- Updates existing tools and report creation scripts to add new components to existing reports, or to change the format of a given report.
- Extracts and processes data from existing sources in order to generate Ad Hoc reports in response to inquiries from senior managers and other departments.
- Investigates new data sources to determine how the data can be used to create new reports, or enhance existing reports, to further the goal of improved network quality and performance and reduce the cost of maintaining the network.
- Critical analysis and comparison of data sources to determine the accuracy and limitations in the use of the data.
- Development of tools and scripts for the processing of data and the use of advanced report generation tools to create new reports.
- Work with other groups to improve quality and reduce efforts through process improvements and elimination of duplicate efforts.
QualificationsProven ability to understand data and present information in meaningful ways in order to improve quality and productivity is required. Previous experience working in a wireless network carrier operational environment is a plus. Strong background in data mining and manipulation, statistical techniques, database applications a plus.§ Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new tools quickly and efficiently.§ Demonstrated ability to investigate challenging issues in a network carrier environment using log files, statistics, and discussions with technical experts to understand the issue, its impact to users, and impact to defined metrics.§ Effective communication skills with the ability to work with other groups to understand their work processes and information sources and to aggregate, organize and present data.§ Ability to work semi-independently to clarify requests, collect and process data from existing and new sources, and work with other groups to understand underlying issues, driving towards completion of stated goals, seeking information and guidance where required.§ Proficiency in trend analysis and the development of tools and techniques to further identify and classify problems.§ Seasoned professional able to interact with people at all levels of the organization and with customers.§ Ability to efficiently handle multiple tasks and projects.§ Familiarity with the use of databases and the creation of SQL queries.§ Proficiency in the use of scripting tools. Experience with Visual Basic 6, Visual Basic.net, or Perl is a plus. § Experience with advanced report generation tools such as Crystal Reports, Web Intelligence and Excelsius is a plus.
Education:Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, telecommunications, mathematics or related technical field.
