Instructional Leader’s Job Purpose:  To build and maintain a teaching staff that excels in teaching, is committed to Perspectives Charter School curriculum, adheres to the state standards and College Readiness Standards for their curriculum, is committed to making data driven decisions, is committed to raising standardized test scores overall, supports effective communication with students, parents and colleagues about progress
 
Goals and duties
 
I.      Teacher support and coaching:  IL provides support to a set group of teachers by working with teachers on:
ü         Academic Rigor
ü         Data Use
ü         Academic Alignment
ü         Instructional Expectations
 
Specific duties include:
1.       Academic Rigor, supporting classrooms in which:
o       teachers pose questions to students that require high-order thinking
o       teachers create learning opportunities with clear and challenging objectives 
o       teachers facilitate learning opportunities in which learning is treated as an integrative process, in which new learning is linked to previous experience and knowledge and skills
o       teachers create learning opportunities that require sophisticated levels of cognitive and/or emotional judgment 
o       teachers facilitate learning opportunities that require students to make authentic applications of new knowledge to a relevant real-work context
o       and, teach classes to model successful learning opportunities and promote academic rigor
2.      Data Use
o       supports teachers’ collaboratively reviewing and scoring student work
o       supports teachers in their engagement of students in the monitoring of their own learning and assessment data 
o       works with teachers to examine last year’s assessment data when planning for the upcoming school year and continually monitoring progress utilizing new data
o       ensures that teachers work towards meeting the IL Standards, College Readiness Standards and improved performance on standardized assessments
3.      Academic Alignment
o       provides structures and processes for alignment of instructional, teaching and assessment practices
o       collects and reviews content and curriculum maps quarterly, and revises annually in preparation for the upcoming school year
 
 
4.      Instructional Expectations
o       investigates scientifically based research and makes formal recommendations for shaping best practices, curriculum and school-wide initiatives 
o       provides clear expectations in developing improved classroom instruction, student performance and student behavior, and has effective processes in place for those teachers who don’t meet expectations
o       supports teachers’ use of differentiated instruction strategies that engage students with varied ability levels and interests, including ELL and SPED students
o       demonstrates a commitment to literacy by supporting teachers DEAR facilitation, vocabulary activities and reading and writing across content areas
 
    II.      Professional Development: IL provides support for on-going growth through ongoing evaluation and feedback, and provided targeted and useful training
 
Specific duties include:
o       works with teachers to develop and manage teachers’ progress towards quarterly benchmarks and yearly goals
o       ensures attendance at team and department meetings, and facilitates meetings that support peer collaboration and ongoing professional development
o       creates the format for pre- post- conferences for classroom observations to facilitate teachers’ reflection and ensure that teachers’ have ongoing and timely feedback
o       plans and implements monthly professional development for teachers based on individual and organizational needs around increasing student achievement
o       IL provides professional development allowing teachers to understand their students’ performance on standardized tests and implement classroom practices that will increase student performance
o       trains teachers in good test construction and supports teachers in developing interim assessments that are aligned with the curriculum maps, follow test specification guidelines and are peer reviewed
 
 III.      A Disciplined Life, Instructional Leaders provide modeling and coaching around The Perspectives Way
 
  IV.      Parental Involvement, Instructional Leaders help teachers prepare for and provide support during parent-teacher conferences
 
 
     V.      General Responsibilities: In addition to the goals and duties listed above, ILs are have general responsibilities that support their team and the larger school community.
 
Specific duties include:
o       Monitors  teachers’ use of PowerTeacher to ensure that the required data is entered in an accurate and timely manner
o       communicates with school community during staff meetings about issues concerning the overall school
o       provides formative and summative evaluations of teachers’ performance using classroom observation rubric and teacher evaluation rubric
o       ensure that teachers respect the resources provided for students’ academic growth (texts, calculators, audio-visual equipment, etc.)
o       communicates formally on a bi-weekly basis with principals, providing an overview on teachers’ ability to achieve academic rigor in the classrooms, their success with implementing The Perspectives Way and their effectiveness at improving students learning and achievement
o       communicate with the SHOP around Interim Assessment logistics
