TITLE: High School Head Football Coach
QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Valid Illinois teacher certification or ACEP recognition
2) Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program
3) Has previous successful coaching experience in football
1) The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of
the sport and at the same time must continue to examine new theories and
procedures pertinent to the field
REPORTS TO: The athletic administrator, who provides overall objectives and final
evaluation in conjunction with the high school principal.
SUPERVISES: A staff of high school assistant coaches in conjunction with the athletic
administrator and the respective principal.
JOB GOAL: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training
necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At
the same time, the student shall receive instruction that will lead to the
formulation of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social
behavior, self-discipline and self-confidence.
GENERAL:
1) The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community’s image of the entire system. The public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not over-ride the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.
2) The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk injury factory and due process predicaments.
3) It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) ORGANIZATIONAL AND COMMUNICATION
a. Send information/correspondence to players/parents
b. Conduct orientation programs for parents, athletes and coaches
c. Assume responsibility for schedule development
d. Develop procedures for open communication with parents and athletes
e. Establish dialogue with parents and players to address issues or concerns
f. Establish links, develop, and work with community programs and feeder schools that will supply athletes into your program
g. Develops team morale and rapport
h. Disciplines in a firm, fair, and consistent manner
i. Encourages athletes to participate in other school sports and activities
j. Conducts oneself in a professional manner on and off the field
k. Is punctual
l. Is cooperative in sharing facilities
m. Communicates effectively with the media
n. Establishes and maintains good rapport with the coaching staff, faculty, and administration
o. Works cooperatively and communicates regularly with the athletic director
2) ADMINISTRATIVE
a. Budget preparation
b. Equipment inventory/ordering/management
c. Repair and cleaning
d. Selects, organizes, and evaluates staff
e. Make travel arrangements
f. Implement school athletic code
g. Ensure completion of health exam by athletes
h. Supervise practice, contest, and locker room facilities and the transportation of athletes to and from practices/contests
i. Check for residence ineligibility and living arrangements that do not involve custodial parents
j. Communicates with assistants as to their roles, duties, and expectations
k. Promotes and publicizes team and individual achievement to the media and school
l. Demonstrates care of facilities
m. Ensures full compliance with school, district, conference, and IHSA rules and regulations
n. Disseminates player information/letters to colleges in a timely manner
o. Monitor athlete attendance/behavior/academic status and provide study tables for student-athletes that are in need.
p. Check grades at quarter/semester
q. Determine and procure team awards
r. Administer season-ending program evaluation by athletes and parents
s. Complete required administrative reports by designated date(s)
t. Performs other duties as assigned
3) TRAINING AND PREPARATION
a. Appropriate development of positive sportsmanship
b. Sequential conditioning
c. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge for this level of coaching
d. Teaches appropriate fundamentals, skills, and strategies
e. Appropriate positive motivation
f. Plans and organizes for effective practices
g. Publicly rewards good effort and performance with praise
h. Use effective game strategy
i. Prepare a off-season conditioning/weightlifting program
j. Prepare pre-season training camp under IHSA guidelines
4) SPORTS MEDICINE
a. Ability to use approved first-aid and CPR skills
b. Interact with team physicians, parent(s) and athletic trainers following injury to an athlete
c. Ensure athlete is cleared by M. D. in order to return to practice
d. Develop and implement a site-specific emergency response plan
e. Has completed required CPR/AED training course
5) SELF-IMPROVEMENT
a. Attends required meetings
b. Attends coaching clinics
c. Reads current literature
d. Evaluates program with staff and makes appropriate changes
e. Cooperates with performance evaluation and implements recommendations for improvements
